Grafting
Instructions
Grafting is a method used to join two pieces of knitting together. Grafting consists of using a darning needle to form another row of stitches between the two pieces of knitting thus forming an invisible seam. In the case of the Ankle Socks pattern, grafting is used to finish off the toe.
1. To begin grafting, you should have two needles with an equal number of stitches on each.
2. Break off yarn leaving a thread approximately 30cm to 40cm long and thread onto wool or darning needle.
3. *Starting with the front row of stitches, pass the threaded darning needle through the 1st stitch knit wise and slip stitch off the needle. Then pass the darning needle through the 2nd stitch purlwise and leave stitch on the needle.
4. Now the back row of stitches; pass the darning needle through the 1st stitch purlwise and slip stitch off the needle. Pass the darning needle through the 2nd stitch knit wise and leave stitch on the needle.*
5. Repeat from * to * to the end.
Some patterns instruct the knitter to slip all stitches off the needles before grafting but that method can be fiddly and there's a danger of dropped stitches. With the two needle method described above, there's less likelihood of dropping stitches.
