Cords & Tassels

Step by step instructions for making Cords and Tassels
To Make a Cord
1.  Cut several strands of yarn at least three times the desired length of the end product.
2.  Make a knot at either end, keeping the yarn strands at an even tension.
3. Hold one end firm and slip a knitting needle or pencil between the strands of yarn at the other end.  The fixed end can be held by pinning to a board or trapping in a door jamb or drawer.
4.  Turn the needle/pencil over and over until the strands are tightly twisted.
** See Note
5.  Keep the twisted cord taught to avoid tangling and carefully fold in half.
6.  Knot the two ends together leaving some loose, untwisted strands at each end.  These loose
strands will form the tassel.
7.  Allow the folded cord to twist back on itself, keeping the twists even.
8. Bind the knot with matching yarn and fasten off by passing the end of the binding yarn through the knot with a darning needle.
9.  Trim the ends to form a tassel.

**Note  When adding cords to hats,  thread the tightly twisted yarns through the prepared loop and slide the loop to the middle of the piece before performing step 5.

To Make a Tassel
1.  Take two 11cm squares of stiff card.
2.  Place the two pieces together and wrap your chosen yarn around  the card
approximately 50 times as illustrated.
3.  Cut the loops by slipping your scissors
between the two cards.
4.  Keeping the strands together and using
a long piece of matching yarn, tie securely
at the middle.
DO NOT TRIM THE LONG ENDS
5.  Fold the tassel in half and secure tightly with a matching yarn close to the knot as illustrated.
6.  Bind tightly at the knot end, and fasten off by passing the loose end through the binding with a darning needle.
7.  Trim the ends of the tassel and use the long ends to attach the tassels to the ear flaps and the crown of your hat.
